The Angel Building was the refurbishment of a 1960’s office block which involved a total restructuring of the internal building envelope for the client Derwent London. From the earliest design stage Andrews were employed to design, manufacture and install a bespoke terrazzo floor based on a concept the architect had viewed in an Italian café of random marble inserts bedded in an insitu terrazzo matrix. Based on the size of the project it became clear this concept would not be feasible therefore the option of manufacturing precast slabs incorporating the marble insert was selected. Manufactured at our Leeds office over a six month period, the process involved laying bespoke sized slabs ranging in size from 600x600x50mm to 1200x960x50mm to the architects design with over 90,000 individual 80x40mm Thassos marble cubes. A requirement for a precast terrazzo stair incorporating the same detail and a band of Thassos to the front nosing was also required which again was manufactured in our Leeds facility. This precast was installed on site by our skilled operatives, bedded on cement and sand, and ground and polished to a 120 grit finish on programme and within budget.
The project has met with universal acclaim and was nominated for the RIBA Sterling prize in 2011, with the terrazzo flooring being nominated at the prestigious Specialist Subcontractors Awards under the category of “best Internal fit out”.
